Q&A: Interview with Harvey Street

Harvey Street is a five-piece indie and alternative rock band based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Their debut album, Great Escape, was released on May 16, 2025 and features eleven unique tracks all very different from one another. Prior to Great Escape, Harvey Street released several singles and EPs which helped them gain traction and begin to host headline tours.  The band has provided support for some iconic bands within the indie-rock scene, such as Flipturn and Winyah.  

Harvey Street has seen some changes in terms of members over the years but currently feature Jerome Bermudez (lead singer and rhythm guitar), Jackson Reed (lead guitarist), Finn Ulrich (bassist), Josh Burgess (drummer), and Erich Kronschnabel (keyboard and synth). The band is now in the midst of their “Talk it Out" tour and I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with them before their sold out show at the Mercury Lounge in New York on June 27th. Harvey Street has a handful of shows lined up around the U.S through August and let me tell you…you won’t want to miss out on these. 

ECHO MAGAZINE: What is Harvey Street’s origin story? Being from Raleigh, North Carolina how did you meet and form Harvey Street?

JEROME: Harvey Street was formed back in 2022. Our old drummer had this house on “Harvey Street” and we would just practice there because we were all from NC State. We started writing music and had the opportunity to play at a venue in Raleigh. We had some buzz around town then two years ago in Charleston we had the opportunity to tour and that’s when Jackson and Josh hopped on the project. About one year ago we added our current bass player, Finn, because our original front man left so I stepped in and it’s been this group rockin ever since. 

JOSH: I would just say Jerome is super humble about this but we hadn’t done a lot until he became our front man, to be honest with you. We had done a little bit of touring and buzz going on but things have really taken off since he stepped up. 

Who are your biggest musical influences/inspirations? Why? 

JEROME: Yeah that’s always a tough one because we are a bit all over the place, but some of the biggest ones are Peach Pit, Spacey Jane…

JOSH: I would say Mt. Joy live and Flipturn for sure. We all have interestingly super different music tastes, we’re kinda all over the place so when we find songs that we all like we’re like “oh my god this is crazy”. I feel like it’s healthy to bring in different spheres of influence and we are very intentional about originality and we want all of our songs to not sound like anything else. 

Your newest EP, Insomnia, dropped on March 6th…what was the inspiration/vision for this EP? 

JEROME: It wasn’t intended to be an EP but a series of single releases and then it came together as an EP.

JOSH: We’re very slowly waterfalling an album. We were in Nashville now going back to Raleigh, had a bunch of touring, we’ve written and recorded a lot of stuff, we have released singles and on the fourth one it does become an EP technically. These will all be on our album so it’s a very long-winded sneak peek to the album. 

Can you talk about the album? What’s the scoop? 

JOSH: There’s not a release date for the album yet but it’s all done and we’ll play a couple of unreleased ones tonight. Everyone who has seen us on this tour in particular have heard about half of the album. There’s one feature by Wim Tapley which is exciting and I think per usual for Harvey Street it is all over the place. We deal with positive emotions, negative emotions, as well as inclusion/friendship/togetherness as a common theme throughout all the songs. 

Let’s talk about New York City. What is your favorite thing about playing a show in New York?

JACKSON: Yeah it’s just the best. We always give ourselves a couple of days to hang out in the city whenever we’re visiting. We all have friends here we either went to school with or that just moved to New York so we always reunite with people we love and there’s always something to do. 

JEROME: We spent a couple of days here last week in between our runs and I got a tattoo and so did he (Finn) unplanned. We were going to the gym and the spot next door was holding a flash deal so we were like “we’re going!”. 

JOSH: My bias would be that I’m very grateful our tour lines up with Goose’s for New York. Two years in a row at least I have been able to catch the MSG show while we’re out here for our own show. Last year was their first MSG headline and they mentioned playing Mercury seven years ago. 

FINN: My personal favorite part about playing in New York is my family and cousins out here who are coming to the show that haven’t seen Harvey Street before, so I’m very excited for that. 

What is your favorite song to play on this tour?

JEROME: “Down and Out” because it’s super easy to get into and people start to move automatically. It’s just one of my favorites to play and we transition to a song that everyone really knows. 

FINN: My favorite is “I’m Your Line” because it’s got this perfect flow of “up moment”/”low moment” and there’s this awesome bass feature at the end and we have this sick transition into a jam immediately after the song ends. I’m so in love with that part of the set. 

JACKSON: For me it’s an unreleased one called “Heat”. It’s so different from any of our other songs. In general we have that happy sort of feel-good vibe. This is a bit of a “sexy song” in a way, which is a route we haven’t gone down. It gets the people moving, it’s one of those beats that is hard to not dance to. 

JOSH: My least favorite and favorite at the same time is “Insomia” because I keep on writing these drum parts that are annoying to recreate live. And it is every time. I totally did it to myself. It’s fun, I like the challenges so that one is hard but I enjoy it.

Any funny or memorable moments from this tour? 

JACKSON: There hasn’t been like one single recurring bit, which there usually is. 

JOSH: I’ll show you what today was. I was crying at these. This guy, and credit to him I want to shake his hand, he is incredible. He shot some of our show on his meta glasses last night. You can only really hear his audio. 

JACKSON: The energy is all that matters. That’s the exact fan we want. 

FINN: He said that was his first concert ever, so he’s just over the moon. 

JEROME: That’s the first time this has ever happened. 

JOSH: So the meta glasses moment for today. There’s like eight moments every day. For me personally, the funny moments all flood back to me when I get home. It’s really nice to chill but we all enjoy what we do. 

For any new listeners, which song would you recommend to them and why? 

JACKSON: I love “Betty”. It’s fallen low on our discography but it’s a great slow one with a simple/catchy chorus. That’s one to check out for sure. 

ERICH: “Free Myself” because it's our biggest song and the one most people connect with. It’s a good jumping off point. 

FINN: “I’m Your Line” because it has all of the themes we try to incorporate into our music. It’s a super fun/lovely song full of good vibes. 

JEROME: “Down and Out” for sure. It’s one of my favorite songs to play but one of my favorite songs to listen to as well. 

JOSH: “Insomnia”, again because it’s upbeat and rocky. We get to jam at the end and it’s representative of our whole vibe.
