SUNTWIST on Their Debut EP, Matchbox

by Norah Jerinic-Brodeur

Up-and-coming Phoenix indie-rock band, SUNTWIST, have officially dropped their debut EP, Matchbox. I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with the boys of SUNTWIST (Logan Mullert, Isaac Morrison, Braden Kotzin, Grant Baker, and Nathan Dilla) prior to their set on 9/18 at the Crescent Ballroom supporting Moontour. We talked about all things EP release, with lots of bits here and there, of course.
SUNTWIST formed slowly but surely, as the five of them met during their time in college at GCU in Phoenix. Initially, Logan and Isaac held it down as a duo. Shortly after they began the project, they met Grant, Nathan, and Braden…and the rest is history. The boys’ friendship and connection over their passion for music is evident in their band dynamic and stage presence. I truly enjoyed the opportunity to sit down with SUNTWIST and learn more about their shared influences and future goals for their project. Not only that, but the experience of bonding with local artists over the music scene in general is something I will always appreciate and admire.
If SUNTWIST was forced into a metaphorical music box, they would definitely find themselves in that of the “indie-rock” genre. However, with a dynamic and evolving list of influences, why limit themselves? Artists such as Djo and the Strokes serve as the band’s main current influences, but they note the everchanging nature of their inspirations that reflect where the band is at in a given point of time. At the core of their music, SUNTWIST simply strive to foster a community with the mindset of things not being “too deep.” In other words, they boys truly hope to put a smile on people’s faces and create an engaging live music experience; the more phones that are down the better.

SUNTWIST just released their debut EP, Matchbox, on 9/18. The five tracks highlight the band’s strengths and capture their collective “comfortable sound”, which is rather dynamic. At a time in their lives with lots of changes on the horizon (graduating from college and moving away) this EP serves as a snapshot in their career as a band and represents who they are at this very moment. I strongly encourage you to listen to Matchbox for yourself. I guarantee you will experience the lightheartedness and optimism that radiates throughout SUNTWIST’s tracks.
Lucky for you, SUNTWIST are locked in with more upcoming Arizona local gigs and festivals. Make sure to catch the boys at their sets at DUSK Music Festival in Tucson on 11/13 and the infamous M3F Fest in Phoenix on 3/5/27. Last plug for now…SUNTWIST’s debut EP, Matchbox, is available on the streaming platform of your choice. You know what you need to do!
