Welsh indie-rock band Crime Scene have just released their latest single Softspot, a track that’s been five years in the making. Written by lyricist Peter Taylor at 16 and played across the band’s live shows, it has now finally been released on streaming platforms.
Softspot carries a weighted story, told through a textured production and vulnerable lyricism. Taylor, when discussing the song via Instagram, stated that the newest release was centered in the ‘subconscious attachment that you build because you’re seeing this person as your way out of the depression that you’re in.’ Ultimately Taylor revealed how a person making things better in a bad time can lead to clinging onto the idea that they can fix all the wrong in your life.

The listener is instantly pulled into the inner turmoil of the narrator through heavy instrumentation. Push and pull lyricism weaves over and under an ever increasing rhythm, becoming vital to the story as it allows you to feel the desperation of the narrator as he begs this person to just give one chance to him. The reluctance of letting that person go is etched into the repetitive line ‘I don’t want to grow up, if it’s not with you.’
To celebrate the release, Crime Scene performed at Porter’s Cardiff, a grassroots music venue, on the 15th April. Softspot has come over a year after their last single Medicine, and it’s clear it was worth the wait. It is still unclear if Softspot is part of a larger project for the band, for now we’ll just have to wait and stream.
