On March 4, 2026, Portuguese experimental band Unsafe Space Garden released their fourth album, O Melhor e o Pior da Música Biológica, and it’s an extraordinary love letter to life. This six-piece band brought colorful and innovative sounds to the forefront of this album, making it clear that they refuse to be boxed into any one genre of music. Don’t worry if you don’t know Portuguese– O Melhor proves that music itself is a universal language.
The first track, “Tás aqui?,” succeeds in setting the mood for the rest of the album. USG tells listeners that this album will be unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. “Aqui não há nada convencional,” they sing. “Nothing here is conventional.” The repetition of “estamos vivos” (“we are alive”) serves as a great reminder that, despite all of the noise in our lives, we are still here experiencing life together.
While all the tracks on O Melhor are incredibly upbeat, “Sítios” is easily one of the most danceable. It has a funky sound that alternates between bouncy verses and a chorus that amps up the intensity. Listening to “Sítios,” I could almost picture David Byrne doing his eccentric, geometric dances. After watching some of USG’s live performances, I think this is exactly how you should dance to this song.
The last two songs, “Ode à Vida” and “A Vida Não É Uma Merda,” round off this fun album by expressing a fearless, laidback attitude towards life. In the penultimate song, we hear the lyrics “tengo miedo” (“I’m scared”) repeated, ending when lead vocalist Alexandra Saldanha sings, “e por isso, vivir” (“and because of that, I live”). The final track ties a vibrant bow on the album with lively synth runs and the idea that we should all take life a little less seriously.
In their release day Instagram post, USG stated, “This album was born from a genuine desire to lift the planet’s spirits.” Upon listening to O Melhor, it’s clear they’ve achieved this goal. In a time filled with uncertainty and hardship, O Melhor is the high-spirited album we so desperately needed.
